Design Engineer

Job Description

Our client is seeking a self-motivated, hands-on engineer to design and develop LED modules. This individual will be accountable for the specification, design, and preliminary testing of module offerings and will work within a small, dynamic team that is responsible for the complete product lifecycle from initial concept through manufacturing ramp-up. A successful candidate would thrive under tight deadlines and enjoy the thrill of a start-up business.

Job Responsibilities

  • Creation of LED combinations to achieve system level module specifications
  • Experimentation of LED boards with photometric and electrical equipment
  • Population of PCBs with LEDs and electrical components for engineering testing
  • Yield analysis of modules’ mass production lines using statistical tools
  • Complete product concept, design integration, and verification testing of an LED module system and its components
  • Creation of thermal models of LED module system design to ensure successful product lifetimes
  • Work with Legal team to file appropriate intellectual property documentation
  • Assess performance/functionality vs. cost tradeoffs and communicate to purchasing and management
  • Perform engineering analysis; conduct testing and data analysis on a variety of complex problems including troubleshooting circuits; summarize data and communicate findings within team
  • Supply appropriate test results and documentation for regulatory submission
  • Ensure complete and accurate engineering design documentation and drawings
  • Analyze final product outcome to uncover continuous process improvements
  • Make individual contributions, yet stay focused on the goals of the group and operate within the bounds of the team
  • Focus on innovation and continuous improvement in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Work directly with manufacturing operations and test engineering to ramp new products into production, as well as manage project/product priorities

Education Requirements

  • BS Electrical Engineering (or Physics degree is accepted if you have had electrical experience)

Other Requirements

  • 1-3 years experience designing LED-based light sources or similar based projects
  • Hands-on lab work with board-level electronics
  • Capable of using electronic lab equipment (i.e. multimeters, power supplies, power analyzers)
  • Detailed knowledge of product development lifecycle of electro-mechanical devices
  • Understanding of various electrical components, materials, and manufacturing methods
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate problem solving using creative/innovative design and process approaches
  • Self-starter; capable of initiating projects with little supervision and keeping up with a fast development pace
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software and familiarity with windows operating environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient with MS Office and Windows operating system
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with circuit model CAD tools such as Altium, OrCAD, and Solidworks
  • Communicate adeptly with international teams
  • Efficient use of Data analysis tools such as JMP, Excel, and VBA
  • Circuit and mechanical design experience for LED boards
  • Expertise in LED light fixture power electronics from initial design through procurement
  • Knowledge of color wavelengths, LED binning, and color mixing
  • Experience with regulatory filing (e.g. – UL, CE, CCC) for LED designs and LED safety and voluntary standards
  • Extensive experience with integrating sphere and/or goniophotometer testing
  • Familiarity with the lighting industry and LED market
