The Raleigh Chamber’s Young Professionals Network’s Spring Service Day is a collaboration of volunteers from companies across Raleigh who work to support non-profit organizations across the Triangle. On May 6, two of our Greene team members worked alongside many others to care for our community.
Darren Shrum, our Technology Solutions Recruiting Manager, was on the YPN Taskforce for this event and led the volunteering initiative for the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics is one of Darren’s favorite non-profit organizations and he has volunteered with them several times in the past during their various competitions. On Spring Service Day, Darren and his volunteer team organized the Special Olympics warehouse, sorting their event shirts, trophies, and tents, and also helped with filing and other various activities as needed. One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was the genuine enthusiasm and gratitude the Special Olympics support staff demonstrated to the YPN team. Due to limited help, some of the organizational tasks would have taken the full-time staff a week to complete, but with the YPN team’s help, they were able to do it in a number of hours.
Mike Owens, our Director of Client Development, volunteered with First Tee of the Triangle at Underwood Elementary School. First Tee of the Triangle impacts the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. On Spring Service Day, Mike’s team worked with elementary school children and taught the fundamentals of golf, as well as led conversations on respecting each other, the golf equipment, and their teachers and peers. Mike chose this event because it was the perfect combination of teaching and working with kids as well as being active (he was also hoping to pick up some golfing tips from the kids!). One of the most rewarding aspects of this volunteer event was seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces when they sank a putt as well as having an opportunity to meet professionals from other companies and learn about their previous experiences with volunteering and working with the Chamber.
